The author of this ink painting is Hanabusa Itchô. It was estimated Hanabusa Itchô painted this in 1562–1724. I think the audience would be historians studying Japan and its culture. Or even people studying ink paintings and who have an interest in these kinds of things. The two adults on the right of the photo are puppeteers in this source. It looks like the children on the left of the source are running towards them. When you look at the children’s clothes you can see that two of them (the smaller one running and the girl already in front of the puppeteers) are wearing a belt called obi. This usually indicates that they are girls, though it is hard to tell. Also the kids were bald mainly with some small bunches of hair. That was a Chinese fashion popular in Japan. It was thought to minimize lice and skin ailments. You can also see a half hidden figure watching from a casement window. This could mean the child was from an upper class, who was maybe more sheltered than the children on the street. You can tell from this that kids liked to play games. You can also see the child on the right holding a younger child.
This source tells us that children were treated well because of the how well the children are dressed. Also it tells us that the children like to play games because you can see the children having fun and laughing. When you see the younger child on the older child’s back it tells us that the older children usually looked after the younger ones. The nature of this source is a sketch. Children sometimes appear in these sketches, along with dogs, street vendors, traveling entertainers and other characters. Hanabusa Itchô mainly used ink pens, but many of his ink sketches got lost or destoyed. Hanabusa Itchô use of black and white is very effective. It takes away the distraction of colour and you just notice the shadows. It makes you notice the children and the puppeteers more.
