The shoguns were trying to take power away from the government. With support from the daimyo the emperor maintained his rule during the Heian period. The daimyo had their own-armed guards for protection. The guards are known as bushi (warriors) or samurai. Over time some daimyo became rich from growing crops on their own private estates and also by the taxes they collected. Some powerful daimyos took the opportunity to try seize power from the weakening emperor. It was a period marked by fighting in Japan. The military eventually took control of the government. A military leader called Minamoto Yoritomo had the Emperor appoint him shogun. Japan from then on was mainly ruled by the success of shoguns. There titles were passes down father to son. Occasionally a shogun family would become weak and a rebel leader would seize power from them and then would start a new shogun ruling family. Therefore this is how the shoguns took over power from the government.
The last final shoguns were the Tokuhawa shogunates. The Tokugawa shogunates remained in control of the government during their rule. Other earlier shogunate family’s power weakened as they ruled unlike the Tokugawa shogunates. The Tokugawa family came to power in 1603. They imposed a strict class system, with the samurai at the top. The Tokugawa shogunate’s built a new capital in Edo, the city that is now known as Tokyo. In 1868 Yoshinobu the fifteenth Tokugawa shogun, was forced to give up his position and return his power to the Emperor’s court. The Emperor’s government swept away most of the systems established by the shoguns. This is how the last shogunate government was removed.
